Indian summer,2000
by Bibhas Sen, India
When summer spreads its sway
Can draught remain far away?
We want relief and water
Not grayVIP helicopters.
We want food and fodder.
The animals are first to bear
The brunt of hunger.
Their bodies lie strewn
Amidst deserted village pails and
pitchers.
The dams are dry
The clouds so shy
The land is singed and silent.
It lies like a burnt corpse.
It was with crops full pregnant
But black and dry
The green stalks the death's way went.
We have cut trees
Made holes in thr sky.
We now to heaven cry
Allah megh de, pani de !
Water so cheaper
But so dear
When it tricks from a tanker
In the land of Kutch or
Barmer.
